Each of these observations points to a left–right problem rather than a toe–heel one, and mixing the two muddles your reasoning.

Dorsopalmar balance is read from the side: toe length relative to the heel, whether the heels have run forward under the foot, the angle the wall makes with the ground, and where breakover sits. Train yourself to state both axes separately — for example, 'upright medially, flared laterally, with a long toe and underrun heels' — before drawing any conclusion. Combining them too early makes your explanation hard to follow and easy to challenge, whether in an assessment or with a horse's owner.

Worked Scenario One: The Long-Toed, Underrun-Heeled Hunter

The tempting move is resetting the existing shoes and tidying the toe. The better decision: record the long toe and underrun heels, then plan how to bring breakover back and support the heels within safe trimming limits.

Picture a hunter presented for a routine reset. The feet show an elongated toe, heels that have run forward, and shoes whose breakover sits well ahead of the true toe. A plausible mistake is simply nailing the old shoes back on because the horse 'goes fine in them'. That choice preserves a long lever arm at the toe and continues concentrating load on heel structures that are already working at a mechanical disadvantage.

The stronger decision is to document the findings, reduce the toe where wall and sole depth allow, select or shape shoes that bring breakover back and support the heels, and say why. Match your certainty to your evidence: without radiographs you are reading external landmarks, so phrase conclusions as indications rather than diagnoses, and flag suspected deeper problems to the owner and, where appropriate, their vet. Rehearse that measured, conditional wording aloud until it is automatic.

Worked Scenario Two: Thin Sole and a Responsive Hoof Tester

Here the tempting move is paring the sole until it looks neat and fitting the shoe close all round. Better: protect existing sole depth, fit full around the perimeter, map your hoof tester findings and report them.

Imagine a cob whose soles flex visibly under thumb pressure and whose hoof testers produce a consistent response across the sole. The plausible mistake is rasping and paring to create a clean-looking ground surface, then fitting a shoe tightly against the wall to 'hold it all together'. Paring removes the very depth that protects the pedal bone, and a tight fit leaves the wall no room to expand under load.

The better course is to remove as little sole as the foot permits, seat the shoe to the wall without intruding on the white line, and record exactly where the hoof tester responses were — toe, quarters, heels — in order. Persistent or widespread responses warrant a veterinary conversation before hard work resumes. The examinable skill is restraint plus documentation: knowing what to leave alone, and being able to say why, matters as much as knowing what to change.

Shoe Fit Checks: A Fixed Order You Can Practise Out Loud

A fixed order matters because methodical work is easier to follow and harder to fault.
